The Writing: A Process Approach booklet has been created following a two year project with primary writing educators: leaders, teachers and teaching assistants, exploring best practice in writing instruction.

Within this booklet, readers are given opportunities to explore and reflect on both current thinking from leading experts, in addition to evidence-informed strategies for improving writing. Research shows that standards in writing will improve when writing is taught through a writing process, with each step being modelled by an expert in the classroom.

We also know that identifying audience and purpose, as well as authentic writing outcomes is key to raising standards. This booklet identifies and explains each stage of the writing process and provides key resources and strategies to deploy in the primary classroom. It also contains tools for supporting educators in the planning of a writing unit.

This booklet aims to support educators in becoming expert writing educators as expert decision makers. In making explicit links between cognitive science and recommended teaching strategies, we aim to support educators in having a deep understanding of why these teaching strategies make the difference.

Readers will also be given self-study and reflection opportunities, as well as further reading recommendations to support them in their continuing professional development in writing instruction.
